Johan Liebert

"The Monster Without a Name"

"I was born in a town that was straight out of a fairy tale. Many people died there. And when I walked away, I carried away something with me."

Johan Liebert

About Johan

Johan Liebert is the main antagonist of Naoki Urasawa's psychological thriller manga and anime series "Monster". Born in the late 1960s, he is the twin brother of Nina Fortner (Anna Liebert) and the product of a eugenics experiment orchestrated by Franz Bonaparta.

With his angelic appearance, charismatic personality, and genius-level intellect, Johan manipulates those around him with ease. His true nature, however, is that of a nihilistic serial killer whose ultimate goal is to be the last person alive at the end of the world.

Johan's character represents the ultimate philosophical question about the nature of evil. Is he a product of his environment or was he born that way?

The duality between Johan and his sister is one of the most fascinating aspects of the series. Two children with the same experiences, yet they turned out so differently.

The scene where Johan burns down the library while smiling is still one of the most chilling moments in anime history.
